This four-day accredited course will give you the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to work effectively with women and their children affected by family violence. You will have opportunities to reflect on your practice, and build on your knowledge and skills with current research and evidence.

Introduction

This four-day course will give you the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to work effectively with women and their children affected by family violence. You will have opportunities to reflect on your practice, and build on your knowledge and skills with current research and evidence.

On successful completion of assessment tasks, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally accredited unit: CHCDFV001 Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence.

Please note, CHCDFV001 Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence training should not be used as a replacement for MARAM specific training modules. Please see here for details about MARAM training modules available.


Who is this training for?

  • New workers in family violence services and workers in community, health or legal services who have limited experience responding to family violence.
     
  • New and existing family violence specialist workers. Workers may come from a wide range of interdisciplinary backgrounds, workplace contexts and experience working with the client group.


Pathways

Participants may use this elective unit as part of a stand-alone qualification from either the Community or Health training package.

There are no specified pre-requisites for this unit.
 


Entry Requirements

DVRCV require participants who undertake this course to:
  • Be aged 18 years or over.
  • Have language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and comprehend learning materials and perform tasks related to applying work place practices including using interpersonal skills with clients, questioning, active listening and rapport building, completing accurate and comprehensive records, reports safety and referral information forms.
 
Language, literacy and numeracy requirements
DVRCV needs to determine the support needs of participants undertaking this unit so that participants can meet the requirements of the course they are enrolled in. The participants undertaking this unit require well developed language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills relevant to the context of their role within their workplace. The applicant’s LLN skills will be evaluated during the enrolment process to ensure participants enrolling in the program have the skills to complete all training and assessment.
 
Where additional support needs have been identified an Individual Support Plan will be developed which may include:
  • the suitability of the course
  • any special physical or cultural requirements for the course
  • reasonable adjustments that can be made
  • support that is available including:
  • Information about language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) programs
  • Where possible, the provision of equipment, resources and/or programs to increase access for learners with disabilities and other learners in accordance with access and equity principles
  • Use of trained support staff including specialist teachers, note-takers and interpreters
  • Flexible scheduling and delivery of assessment
 
Provision of additional support services will be provided where necessary to enable students to participate in the same way as any other person regardless of whether support services have been required.

 

Delivery and Duration

This course consists of 4 days face-to-face training (7 hours per day, over 2 days per week, for 2 weeks) plus 15 hours of self-paced learning. Participants are given 1 month after the 4th day of the course to complete their self-paced learning and complete the assessments.

  • In addition the learners are provided with textbooks for reference material
  • Video clips
  • Small group discussions
  • Small group role play/interactive activities
  • Industry expert presentation (guest speaker)
 

What will I learn?

Day 1

The dimensions of family violence, how it is created within our society, the impacts and barriers, family violence theories and practice frameworks.

Day 2

Best practice approaches, indicators of family violence, responding to a disclosure, applying effective engagement skills, application of foundational knowledge and engagement skills in a practice session, ethics and values.

Day 3

Risk assessment and risk management in practice in line with family violence work practices, an introduction to the Multi-Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM), legislation, policies and procedures, preparation and application of assessment task 2 at the end of the day.

Day 4

Preparation and application of assessment task 2 at the beginning of the day, crisis and case management work, incorporating safety planning, appropriate referrals, working collaboratively with other services and record management, and worker wellbeing.


Assessment Arrangements

Assessment will be conducted individually. You will be provided with an Assessment Booklet which includes:
 
  • A full description of all assessment tasks for the unit of competency
  • Assessment instructions for each unit of competency
  • Assessment resources for each unit of competency
  • Details about assessment submission
 
The assessments for CHCDFV001 Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence uses a holistic method of assessment including assessor observation, simulated practice sessions, use of workplace documentation, reflective practice and direct questioning. This allows the assessment of multiple skills and knowledge integrated into simulated workplace tasks and performances where possible. Holistic assessment also recognises the assessment of skills and knowledge in the sequence as they would normally be performed in the workplace.
 
All assessment tasks are assessed by the assessor and then handed back to the participant with feedback. This allows the participant to monitor their progress and re-submit assessments as required.



Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

RPL is an assessment process that assesses the competency(s) of an individual that may have been acquired through formal, non-formal and informal learning to determine the extent to which that individual meets the requirements specified in the training package of VET accredited courses.
 
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available and all participants have the opportunity to participate in RPL. Recognition of Prior Learning is generally recommended where individuals have been working in a relevant job role, however any participant can also self-elect to undertake RPL.

SHS or Specialist Homelessness Services provides funding support to most family violence and housing/homelessness services. If you are unsure about your SHS status, please check with your organisations Finance Officer or Administration Coordinator.
