Digital Safety, Family Violence and Risk Assessment

CAL-DS

If you work in family violence, you need to understand how perpetrators are using technology, and how to support victim survivors who are experiencing tech-facilitated abuse. Based on current research, information and risk assessment protocols, this one-day training will help you increase your practice awareness, skills and client safety.

Introduction

Technology can be an important way to connect with our family, friends and community. It can also be used as a tool of abuse by perpetrators of family violence.

Technology-facilitated abuse is a growing issue in Australia. If you work in family violence, you need to understand how perpetrators are using technology, and what you can do in your role to support victim survivors who are experiencing tech-facilitated abuse.

Based on current research, information and family violence risk assessment protocols, this one-day training will help you increase your practice awareness, skills and client safety in this sometimes-overwhelming digital space. You don’t need to be proficient with technology, only passionate about keeping women and their children safe.

What will I learn?

  • The unique and changing ways technology is being used to exert power and control over women and their children (for example through social media and image-based abuse)
  • The different types of technology used and impacts on women, children and workers
  • How to assess risk and intake questions to add to assessments
  • Safety planning approaches
  • Advocacy options for women and workers – who they can turn to for help

Who is this training for?

Family violence frontline staff, including:

  • Refuge workers
  • Family violence crisis workers
  • Outreach workers
  • After-hours crisis workers
  • Counsellors working with adult survivors and their children

This training is also important for team leaders and senior workers, as we consider practice changes required to support safer risk assessment and safety planning in the digital space.

What past participants say:

“This training was so relevant! I always found tech safety overwhelming and confusing – now I understand what ‘safe’ access looks like in the home and how to include technology in risk assessment.”

“Great training, lots of good information and resources to bring back to the organisation that I work for.”

“Facilitators were really approachable and great at explaining the topics.”

“I really appreciated how the trainers emphasised the importance of the integration of the topic into workplace processes such as intake and assessment.”
