This four-day accredited course will give you the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to work effectively with women and their children affected by family violence. You will have opportunities to reflect on your practice, and build on your knowledge and skills with current research and evidence.

Introduction

This four-day course will give you the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to work effectively with women and their children affected by family violence. You will have opportunities to reflect on your practice, and build on your knowledge and skills with current research and evidence.

At the end of the course, you will be able to identify and respond to victim survivors of family violence, and adopt work practices that support sensitive and individualised interactions with those affected by domestic and family violence.

On successful completion of assessment tasks, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for the nationally accredited unit: CHCDFV001 Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence.

Who is this training for?

  • New workers in family violence services
  • Workers in community, health or legal services who have limited experience responding to family violence.

What will I learn?

Day 1: Understanding family violence

Family violence terms and definitions, prevalence and statistics, common beliefs, attitudes and myths, theories of family violence, dynamics and types of violence, impacts and effects, and barriers to safety.

Day 2: Intersectionality and inclusive practice

Practice approaches, legislation, statutory requirements, mandatory reporting, intersectionality, systemic discrimination and diverse experiences of family violence, warning signs and identifying family violence, direct questioning, and practice with responding to a disclosure.

Day 3: Risk assessment and risk management

Introduction to Multi Agency Risk Assessment and Management Framework (MARAM), risk factors, asking about and assessing risk, introduction to risk management, intervention orders. Participants will spend time competing part of the written assessment. Role Play assessment conducted on Day 3 and Day 4.

Day 4: Worker wellbeing and assessments

Safety Planning, technology facilitated abuse, crisis work and long-term case management, referrals and self-care and reflective practice. Role Play assessment (if not completed on Day 3).

This is a four-day course commencing on the dates listed below.

Cost: 

$595 SHS (Specialist Homelessness Service) funded worker
$1495 Non SHS (Specialist Homelessness Service) funded worker

SHS or Specialist Homelessness Services provides funding support to most family violence and housing/homelessness services. If you are unsure about your SHS status, please check with your organisations Finance Officer or Administration Coordinator.

Please note, CHCDFV001 Recognise and respond appropriately to domestic and family violence training should not be used as a replacement for MARAM specific training modules  Please see here for details about MARAM training modules available.
